temptation-of-jesusThis week we are continuing our study of the Gospel of Mark and looking at Mark 1:12-13. This is the Mark’s account of Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness.

When you read it, you’ll see that it is brief– very brief! We will have to visit Matthew 4:1-11 to fill in some of the details. But this is an important experience in Jesus’ life– and it’s important for us too.

A couple other passages I plan to mention are Romans 5:3-5 and Hebrews 4:14-16. Each of these are relevant to what we’ll be talking about this Sunday. Read these scriptures and see what you think– you may be surprised what God tells you!

Also, if you would like to help with some service opportunities in our new meeting place (Hilltop Community Church Fellowship Hall), please e-mail me (doug.haupt@cox.net) and we can talk. A couple of things that you can help with are:

1) Coming early on Sunday morning (8:45am) to brew the coffee for everyone.

2) Cleaning up the room after the service (vacuum, wipe down counters, etc.)

In the days and weeks ahead, I can meet with Hilltop folks and see other ways we can help keep the facility neat and ready.

Have a great Saturday…

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

I Gotta Check My Bible!

April 27, 2010 by · 1 Comment

We all get e-mails that have cute little thoughts and messages, right? I mean, I seem to get several a day. Sometimes they make us chuckle, sometimes they make us think. Usually, however, they are kinda cliche and cheesy.

I got an e-mail from a friend last week that I figured I’d post for your enjoyment. What I really like about it is that my friend sent it to me. We’ve been meeting and talking a lot about the things of God and spiritual matters– and he poses thoughtful questions. I enjoy our times together.

So this post is for my buddy… I hope you enjoy it, too.

Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone?

iphone

bible

What if we always carried it around in our purses or pockets?

What if we flipped through it several times a day?

What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?

What if we used it to receive messages from the text?

What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?

What if we gave it to kids as a gift?

What if we used it when we traveled?

What if we used it in case if emergency?

Kinda makes you think, huh?

Wow.

I really enjoyed last week in our new location. Thanks to everyone from Hilltop Community Church in making us feel so at home– coffee, pasteries, orange juice… I was excited because the middies (our elementary aged kids) seemed to really get into the worship– then I realized it was just a sugar rush from the food.

I really, really enjoyed everyone being there early! You guys came through! Dare I ask for early arrival again?

Yes, I dare.

JohnTheBaptistThis week we continue in our study of the Gospel of Mark. We’re still focusing on John the Baptist. Read Mark 1:1-11 to hear some of his story. Yes, we will visit some of the other gospels to fill in some blanks again too (I had someone tell me after last week’s message, “We’re studying the Book of Mark… How come you read more from Luke?”… Good point… Perhaps by the end of our Mark study we will have gone through Luke too!).

If you want to read more about John the Baptist, look at last week’s “Events and News” (April 18th News) for the scripture references.

I’m also excited about this week because my dad, Bruce, and his wife, Cathy Jo, will be in attendence. You’ll understand a lot about me once you meet him (at least, where I get my nose).

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Big day this Sunday.grace2flogo-300x150

One reason it’s a big day is that we are meeting in a new location— Hilltop Community Church (see info on our “Home” page… click on “Special Event”).

HilltopCCHere’s what it looks like (see picture on right– guess you figured that out, huh?). As you look at the picture, we will meet in the fellowship hall all the way over on the left. You may want to park on the left side of the church, too (to get to that parking, you can either use the main entrance of the church at the light and drive behind it around the buildings, or use the entrance just south of the light).

The service with start at 9:15am. That’s earlier than normal… So plan accordingly. Hopefully, we’ll have coffee ready (if we can figure out how to make that happen in the new digs). We may evne have some Hilltop folks join us for our service (their service starts at 10:45am– feel free to join them if you’d like!).

I’m excited about the new room and the opportunities this move will provide!

The second reason that this Sunday is a big day is because we are starting a new series/study. We looked at some people who “encountered God” over the fall and winter (Moses, Abraham, Isaiah) and we remembered Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection with Christmas and Easter.

I thought it was time to go through a gospel– time to walk with Jesus directly. To encounter him ourselves– listen to his words; see his miracles, meet his friends. To focus entirely on his story on earth.

So that’s what we’re going to do. We’ll be studying the Gospel of Mark– and we’ll be looking at it throughout the summer (at least). And I am really excited.

As we start a new chapter in the life of our church (a new location), we will move forward with Jesus– the head of the church.

This week we will start at the beginning: Mark 1:1-8.

Mark skips over the birth of Jesus and picks up at the beginning of his ministry (there’s a reason for that and we’ll talk about it Sunday– how’s that for a “teaser”). But before we meet the main character of Mark’s gospel, we meet someone else: John the Baptist.

Who was he? What did he do? Why did he do it? What can we learn from him?

To fully answer these questions, we’ll need to gather some information from the other gospels as well. If you are interested in exploring the story of John the Baptist in more detail before Sunday, you can also read Matthew 3:1-17, 11:1-19; Luke 1:5-25, 1:39-44, 1:57-80; 3:1-22; John 1:6-9, 1:19-34, 3:22-36.

John is quite a character and an amazing man. I can’t wait to look at his story together!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Grace2F Men’s Cookout

Just a reminder… Get info from the article in the “Events and News” section of this website– and sign up by sending a “comment”. Jim needs to know how many guys are coming so we have enough food!

Grace2F Guys Cookout (Men: please read this !)

April 12, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

cookout1A few weeks ago, we talked about a Men’s Retreat for the guys of Grace Family Fellowship. It was difficult for some of us to commit to a whole weekend… So, we’d like to gather the guys for a cookout. We figured that the best night would be the night we had panned for the retreat– this Friday at 7:00pm.

This Friday?! That’s right… Yes, I’m a bit behind on communicating this event– but we are guys, after all. Last minute things don’t phase us, do they?

Here’s the deal:

WHAT: Grace2F Guys Cookout

WHERE: Jim Browning’s house (2004 Wood Hollow Cove, Virginia Beach VA 23454)

WHEN: This Friday, April 16th, 7:00pm

Please respond to this by leaving a “comment” below and telling us you are coming.

Bring $5.00 to cover the costs of food (Jim will take care of the eats– and he does a great job with this!– In order for him to have enough food, we need to know how many guys are coming).

We will eat, play some cornhole (the bean bag tossing game– maybe even have a team tournament) and discuss things that we could do together in the future.

Grace and peace,

Doug

I hope that ya’ll had a great Easter season this year. It was a joy being with you at the Good Friday and Easter services.grace2flogo-300x150

This week, I want to take some time reflecting on the work of Jesus in the cross and resurrection. We just remembered it– now I want us to really consider its significance in our lives.

With that in mind, we will look at a passage of Scripture that seems to capture exactly what Jesus accomplished on our behalf. Some of it may be familiar to you. But some may not– and it is a beautiful thing to see how it all fits together.

The passage is found in Ephesians 2:1-10. As you read the words, imagine that Paul is writing them to you. What does he say? What does it mean? Why does he say it?

Jesus said, “The truth will set you free.” (John 8:32). He also said that he is the Truth. So Jesus sets a person free… Free from what? Free for what?

Great questions… And Paul helps us answer them. So come ready to hear all about this good news (gospel)!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug
