Verbo-Nicaragua Development Fund

November 28, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

This is a message from Grace2F members Tim and Katie Adams…

Dear Friends,

A little over two years ago we launched the Verbo-Nicaragua Development Fund (VNDF) to support our friends’ (Bob & Myra Trolese) ministry in Nicaragua.  We filed the paperwork, put up a website, and started letting people here in the U.S. know all that the folks in Verbo-Nicaragua Ministries have been doing for the past 30 years to make the reality and hope of the gospel practical to impoverished people in Nicaragua.  We didn’t have a grand strategy or a paycheck.  But we knew we had a calling and a Provider.  It has been nothing short of amazing to see what God has done through VNDF – through YOU – in these short two years.  We have stories to tell you, we have a vision to share, and we have a need to put before you.

Since we began VNDF we have never taken a paycheck for the work we do.  Katie and I have raised some personal support but we have both worked a patchwork of full- and part-time jobs to meet our family’s needs.  This summer God moved powerfully in our family in several ways and in VNDF.  We want to share with you how we believe – and our partners in Nicaragua have affirmed – that God is calling us to step out in faith to work at VNDF full-time.  The work has grown beyond what we can do on a part-time/occasional basis.

We will be holding a dessertto tell you (and show you through video!) where VNDF is headed and our family’s next steps.  We would also love for you to meet the newest member of our family – Karina Tatiana whom we met at the Puenta de Amistad orphanage in Managua 6 years ago and who come to be with us just five short weeks ago!  We are excited about what God is doing and want to thank you in person for all the ways you have blessed us by praying, going, and giving.  We want you to taste and see how the Lord really is good.  And we’re going to make it a very tasty event with some delicious Nicaraguan coffee and tres leches cake!  The dessert will be:

Wednesday, December 1 @ 7:00 p.m. at the home of Carlos & Leigh Ellen Rodriguez (873 Old Cutler Road)

You can respond by dropping us an email (katie.adams1@verizon.net) or giving us a call (496-0425).  If your schedules don’t permit you to attend the dessert let us know if we could grab coffee with you at another time to thank you in person and share our plans going forward.

We look forward to sharing a fun evening with you!

grace2flogo-300x150Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope that you have a wonderful holiday and spend some time to consider all the things for which to be thankful. We are truly blessed to live in this country, to live in this time, and to live under the incredible grace of God.

This week, I’ll be reflecting a little on Thanksgiving by sharing something that I am especially thankful about– and I think you’ll be thankful about, too. To illustrate what I mean, I will continue in Mark by looking at Mark 7:31-37.

After this Sunday we will set aside our study of the Gospel of Mark until after the new year. Instead, we will focus on Christmas and the celebration of the birth of Jesus.

Grace and peace,

Doug

Last week we saw Jesus confront the Pharisees (religious leaders of his time). He called them hypocrites and says that “you honor me with your lips, but your heart is far from me.” Jesus goes on to explain that “fixing” your external appearance– through religious activities or even moral behavior– doesn’t change your heart. We discovered that only Jesus can give us a new heart– and the incredible news is that he readily and willingly offers that to us! In fact, he’s already done everything that needs to be donegrace2flogo-300x150 for it to happen.

This week, we’ll see what happens next. Read Mark 7:24-30 (and, if you want to check out the same story in another gospel read Matthew 15:21-28). I believe that this story is directly related to his showdown with the Pharisees in the beginning of Mark 7. To help you understand some of what is happening, here is a note describing the first verse we’ll be looking at this week (I’ll give you the verse then the note):

Mark 7:24– And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

Note:

Jesus traveled about 50 miles to Tyre and then went to Sidon. These were two port cities on the Mediterranean Sea north of Israel. Both cities had flourishing trade and were very wealthy.

In King David’s day, Tyre was on friendly terms with Israel, but soon afterward the city became known for its wickedness. Its king, Ethbaal, even claimed to be God. Tyre rejoiced when Jerusalem was destroyed in 586 B.C. because without Israel’s competition, Tyre’s trade and profits would increase. It was into this evil and materialistic culture that Jesus brought his message. It is interesting that he stressed the importance of inner purity just before visiting Tyre.

Check out the story and let’s talk about it Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

TOYS FOR WEST VIRGINIA!

Last year we asked folks to bring in new or gently used toys for kids in West Virginia. Tim Adams’ mom lives in WV and her church has a toy drive we joined in– and Tim and Katie took them up after Thanksgiving.

We’ll join them again this year as well. This Sunday, we’ll be collecting toys to send up there. Bring them by the church and we’ll get them to kids who need them!

STOCKING UP

I also want to remind you that we try to help out Hilltop Community Church by donating necessary items to reduce costs. Here are some things that you could bring in for all of us to use:

1) Toilet paper

2) Paper towels

3) Styrofoam coffee cups

4) Napkins

5) Coffee

6) Paper cups

7) Large (over 39 gal.) garbage bags
