What You Should Know If You Visit

Service Time:
We meet Sundays at 9:15am and gather for a time of catching up with each other after the service.

Dress:
Casual (really- you can get dressed up if you want, but the Pastor will probably be wearing jeans or shorts)

Kids:
Bring them! We love kids… If you have young ones (infants to 5 years old), we have a room for childcare. Many times the older kids join us for church.

Bring:
A bible. If you don’t have one, we have plenty. Each week we’ll be looking at Scripture straight from the bible to see what God wants to say to us. If you need a bible to take home and keep we would be glad to give you one.

We would love to have you join us on a Sunday!

Although I am a wee bit early, I’d like to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

new-years2010 is now a thing of the past and we are moving on to a whole new year. What do you think about that? Are you excited about the future? Disappointed with the past? Anxious about the days ahead? Longing for what once was?

One thing a New Year often does is to cause us to reflect on where we have been and where we are going. That often leads us to make New Year’s RESOLUTIONS. If you are a person like that I wish you the best of luck.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure the enthusiasm of January 1st ever survives through Valentine’s Day… That’s why we keep having the same resolutions year after year. In fact, I think we could say this about the whole concept of Resolutions…

R-Really

E-exciting

S-strategies

O-of

L-letting

U-us

T-take

I-initiative

O-on

N-nothing

S-solid

Okay, I’m probably not very creative with that– and maybe I sound kinda negative. But the point is this: every year we try to improve areas of our lives on our own and every year we fail and feel worse off then when we started.

With that in mind, we’re going to talk more about resolutions this Sunday. I will give you some great RESOLUTIONS for the new year that actually may make a difference in your life. (I know, I know… I just said I think resolutions are pointless– but you’ll just have to come Sunday to see what I mean.)

Looking forward to Sunday (and 2011)!!

Grace and peace,

Doug

P.S.

Chris Adams underwent lung biopsy surgery last Thusday (Dec.30th). The sugery was successful (they got the lung tissue they wanted), but it is a very painful procedure.

Yesterday was particulary difficult, but the pain is being managed more effectivelty today. Some of the pain killers have Chris beleiving he is the Duke of Wellington and that he invented jello, but otherwise he is recovering nicely.

Please pray for Chris and Amy and their family. He will be in the hospital over the weekend (may come home Saturday).

Then they will await the result from the biopsy to discover a treatment for the lung issues he has been experiencing. Pray for that as well.

Who would have thunk that we would have snow before Christmas here in Southeast Virginia?!?

Well, it happened– and I hope you survived tstarofbethlehemhe snow, sleet, and slush.

This week we continue our look at the Christmas story form Scripture. Sunday we will read the familiar story of the wise men or Magi came from the east and who followed a star to find Jesus.

For the last couple of weeks we have been focusing on God’s gift to us– giving his son. This week we will discover some gifts that we given to Jesus. We learn about some misconceptions of these Magi and we’ll see the power in their gifts.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,
Doug

Do you like waiting? I’m not sure I’ve ever met someone who would answer “yes” to that question. But a reality of the Christian life is that waiting is a big part of it. God’s timing is, often times, different than ours. That can be frustrating, but we need to realize that waiting on God advent calanderhas a purpose– and it is for our benefit.

We’re going to talk about waiting this Sunday– because that is a part of the Christmas story as well.

Read Galatians 4:4-5. We’ll talk about that passage and see how waiting can be the best thing we ever experience!

Also, be sure to see our Christmas Eve service info below.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Greetings to all of you and welcome to Christmas 2010… Yes, indeed, the season is upon us once again. I am sure that many of you have already begun the bevy of activities that are associated with this time of year. Buying presents, decorating the house and yard, setting up the tree.

We’ll start all of that this Saturday (my wife’s birthday is Nov. 29th so we wait till that has passed before moving into Christmas). But, maybe you are like me. As much as I love Christmas, I always head into it with a bit of a concern… How do I keep the real meaning of Christmas from being pushed aside with all the various activities of Christmas?

(Make sure you see the end of this post– there is a great ministry opportunity!)

I thought about that as I watched some Christmas specials on TV with my son this week (none of which mentioned the name Jesus).gold present

So, how can we keep our hearts and minds on Jesus and not on Christmas (I know that sounds a bit odd– but when I say “Christmas” I am talking about all the extraneous stuff). Well, that’s what we are going to be talking about this week and in the weeks before Christmas Eve. We’ll be seeing how we can embrace the traditions and activities of the season with our hearts set on the reason for the season (okay, I know that phrase is cliche– but cliches exist for because they contain some truth).

This week we will look at a very familiar passage in scripture– perhaps the most well-know verses in the Bible. It is not usually considered a Christmas story, but it really is– in fact, I think it captures the meaning and significance of the holiday better than anything else. To prepare, read John 3:16-17. Think about these verses. Read them over several times. Ponder each word. They tell us everything we need to know about God, his Son, and us. They are rich in power and beauty.

Also, I would like you to think about the ways that you keep the real meaning of Christmas in the forefront of you mind during the business of the season. Do you have any traditions or activities to remind you about Jesus?

Finally, lets all pray for each other and for our church– pray that we will embrace this Christmas and enjoy every aspect… that we may experience all the awe and wonder we can.

May God bless you and your family during this Christmas season!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Russell House Ministry

We have a great ministry to the residents of Russell House (across the street from Hilltop Community). We’ve been helping residents empty and then load up their kitchens during a renovation.

We also have a chance– because of the relationships we’ve established to help with other needs. I just got this from Dale Browning this week– take a look and see if you can help:

There is a need for a single bed, mattress and frame for one of the residents
at the Russell House.

I may be able to locate a day bed for the immediate as
the woman is currently sleeping on the floor, but if anyone knows of one
that could be donated please contact me as soon as possible.

Additionally, there are two ladies that will need some help this week or next
moving some things. If anyone is interested in helping for a couple of hours
please let me know.  715-8177 (cell)

Thank you so much!
Peace,
Dale
