Time to Pray!

August 30, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

This Wednesday Oct. 16th, we will meet at the church (Hilltop Community Church Fellowship Hall)  from 7:00pm to 8:00pm for a time of prayer. This is a great opportunity for us to learn about and apply what we studied last Sunday.

I also wanted to give you some ideas on how you can structure your prayer time.

Remember, feel free to pray however you want– but if these ideas help, use them!

Five Fingers of Prayer

1) Your Thumb is nearest to you

So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you.

  • To pray for our loved ones
  • pray for our enemies who, in a negative way, are also near us.

2) The next finger is the Pointing Finger

The pointing finger reminds us of those who instruct so pray for those who are in authority to teach, instruct and heal.

  • This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers.
  • They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction.

3) The next finger is the Tallest Finger

Our tallest finger reminds us of those who are Leaders—in charge.

  • Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry.
  • These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God’s guidance.

4) The fourth finger is our Ring Finger

The ring finger is our weakest finger and it should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain.

5) And lastly comes our Little Finger

The smallest finger of all should remind you to pray for yourself.

  • Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others.

Daily Prayer Ideas

Monday:   Pray for our country, the President, Vice President and all government leaders.

Tuesday:             Pray for the world and for any places of conflict, war, disaster or special need.

Wednesday:      Pray for your local community and for the individuals and issues that influence it.

Thursday:            Pray for world missions, missionaries you know and for the spread of the Gospel.

Friday:                Pray for your family and friends

Saturday:            Pray for your church, its ministry, pastor(s), leaders and congregation.

From the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association

How does one pray? I’ve never been taught how to say a personal prayer or really talk to God.

There is no formula to prayer—it is simply conversing with God. It is essentially talking with God as you would talk with an earthly parent who loves you and wants the best for you. God is your heavenly Father who loves you perfectly.

The ACTS model will be helpful to you as you learn how to pray. ACTS stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication.

  • Adoration means worship. We encourage you to begin your time of prayer by adoring and praising God. Praise Him for who He is and for all that He has done for you. God delights in your praises!
  • Confession, the next component, means agreeing with God about the things that you have done wrong. It’s a time to express sorrow about what you have said, thought, or done that is not pleasing to Him. Ask God to forgive you for these things, and then believe that He does so freely. When you confess your sins, you receive God’s cleansing and this helps to remove any barrier in your communication with Him (read 1 John 1:9).
  • Thanksgiving basically means being thankful to God. Thank Him for His love, protection, and provision just to name a few things.
  • Supplication is the final component, and this means praying for your needs and for the needs of others, such as friends, family, your pastor, missionaries, government leaders, and persecuted Christians around the world. You may want to pray for such things as God’s guidance, wisdom, and opportunities to serve.

Keep in mind that the ACTS model serves as a guide to help you, not a rigid formula to follow. There is no “canned” approach that you need to take; just talk from your heart. There are additional steps that will help. Set aside a specific time to pray each day.

Pick a quiet place where you can be alone with God. You will also find a special blessing if you begin your time by reading the Bible. Select a passage to read (download a Bible reading plan) and spend some time thinking about it deeply. Reflect on what God is impressing on your heart to you through the passage.

Ask God to help you apply what you are learning. God wants you to share your heart with Him, and He wants to share His heart with you—this can take place anytime, day or night!

Grace and peace,
Doug

This Sunday we will begin a new three-part series called What Is the Gospel?

During this series we will look at three different facet of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In Romans 1:16 Paul makes this extraordinary pronouncement:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

The gospel is powerful. It is not only the beginning of the Christian life, it is the entire focus of the Christian life. What does that mean? How do we keep the gospel as the central part of our lives?

That’s what we will be talking about over the next 3 weeks as we look at 3 district and practical aspects of the GOSPEL…

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

We are going to see Nehemiah and his country men finish their incredible building project. And we’ll see the result is much more than just the protection of the city of Jerusalem.

Come hear about the last Brick Nehemiah has for and the building projects in our lives.

Looking forward to Sunday!

This Sunday we are continuing our study of the Book of Nehemiah…

Last week in Nehemiah 5, we saw that Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem had to deal with internal opposition. This is often more painful and challenging than external opposition because we are often caught by surprise when the opposition comes from those closest to us.

We also looked at 4 questions from Nehemiah 5:

1) Where is the opposition coming from?

2) What are the problems this opposition creates?

3) According the Nehemiah, what is the root of these problems?

4) According to Nehemiah, what is the result of these problems?

This week we will focus on the last 2 questions. Read Nehemiah 5 and see if you can find the answer. I’ll give you a hint: the answer to questions 3 & 4 is found in a single verse.

Also, I want to thank everyone who was able to attend the first official “Church Meeting” of Grace Family Fellowship last night. God has been building, guiding, and directing us for the last seven years and he will continue to do so now and in the future. He is faithful to complete the work he has started in the church!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Nehemiah Part 15– Brick of AWARENESS

August 15, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

In Nehemiah 5 we see some new opposition to the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem. It is a kind of opposition we all face (and even create) with those closest to us. How do we respond to the internal opposition that can devastate the building projects to which God has called us?

CHURCH MEETING- Wednesday August 14th

August 12, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

I want to remind everyone that we will have a Church Meeting on Wednesday, August  14th at 7:00pm in the Fellowship Hall of Hilltop Community Church.

This is for EVERYONE WHO CALLS GRACE2F THEIR CHURCH HOME. I have shared over the summer that we need to make some decisions as a church that are important and necessary. I am asking that you come to hear some of our challenges and some opportunities.

This is a very important time for us and I ask that you pray for our time before hand.

Grace and peace,

Doug

This Sunday we are continuing our study of the Book of Nehemiah by looking at Nehemiah chapter 5.

We have seen that Nehemiah and his country men have faced great opposition in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. Last week we saw how Nehemiah adjusted his original plan to  meet this opposition– and we must be ready to adjust our plans as well.

In Nehemiah 5, we see some more opposition that Nehemiah must face. As you read this chapter, be thinking about these questions:

1) Where is the opposition coming from?

2) What are the problems this opposition creates?

3) According the Nehemiah, what is the root of these problems?

4) According to Nehemiah, what is the result of these problems?

We will see that Nehemiah 5 is very much like many of the issues and challenges in our lives– and, hopefully, we will see that these challenges can be overcome with the next brick Nehemiah hands us.

Also– we will have a GRACE FAMILY FELLOWSHIP CHURCH MEETING this Wednesday, August 14th in the Fellowship Hall of Hilltop Community Church. I would like everyone who calls this church “home” to attend to discuss our goals as a church and evaluate how we are doing in meeting those goals. This is a time for all of us to prayerfully consider where God is leading us.

Looking forward to Sunday (and Wednesday)!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Nehemiah Part 14– Brick of ADJUSTMENT

August 5, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

In Nehemiah 4:12-23, we see the 12th brick that can help us as we try to build or rebuild the walls of our lives– the Brick of ADJUSTMENT. How can we make adjustments  in our lives to overcome the opposition we face.
