This week we continue our series called  The Lord of the Story.

Abraham as been called the “father of all who believe” (Romans 4:11). That means that Abraham is the “father” of all Christians.

So, what do you know about this incredible character in the Bible? His story is an important one because we shall see that (and I keep saying this!) his story is our story too.

This week we will cover a lot of territory and look at the life of Abraham. Probably the best know part of his story is when God tells him to sacrifice his son. How do we reconcile that story with a loving God? Well, come Sunday and find out.

To prepare for this Sunday, there is a lot you can read. Abram’s (God later changes his name to Abraham) story is found in Genesis 12 through Genesis 22. For Sunday, we will focus on Genesis 12:1-5, Genesis 15, Genesis 17, and Genesis 22:1-14.

I know this is a lot of Scripture… But he is the father of all who believe.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

The Lord of the Story– The Tower of Babel

January 28, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Series: The Lord of the Story

In the story of The Tower of Babel, we see that mankind, made in the image of God, can achieve great things. But these achievements can actually drive us away from God rather than towards him. God, in his lovingkindness, may thwart these plans and actions for our own benefit.

This week we continue our series called  The Lord of the Story.
We will be looking at the story of the Tower of Babel. It is a story about incredible achievement and God’s response. At first glance it may appear that God acts irrationally or even defensively when he sees what people are capable of– but, as is often the case, there is much more at stake than meets the eye.

To prepare for this Sunday, you will want to read two stories and we will see how they are related. First read the story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11:1-9. The go forward a few chapters and read the story of Jacob’s Ladder in Genesis 28:10-15.

As we look at these stories we will see some similarities and differences– and why the Tower of Babel is so significant to our lives today.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

The Lord of the Story– Noah

Series: The Lord of the Story

In the story of Noah and the Flood, we see both God’s judgment and his loving kindness. How can we understand the events of the story through the eyes of a loving God?

Last week, we began a new series at Grace Family Fellowship called The Lord of the Story.

I had planned on starting the series with the story of Noah and the Flood. But as I was thinking about it, I decided that we needed a bit more of an introduction into our look at God in the Old Testament. The reason? Well, sometimes look at the God of the Old Testament with fear and trepedation. He can appear unfair, angry, and, well, kinda mean. But when we see Jesus, we have a different picture. Kind, gentle, merciful…

As we look at stories form the Old Testament, we must keep in mind that the God of the Old Testament and God of the New Testament are the same. And over the next several weeks we are going to see that.

In addition to Sunday mornings, we will use our Wednesday night Bible studies to look more deeply into each story and see how they can apply to various areas in our lives.

This week we will look at the story of Noah and the Flood. Although most of us know the basics of this story, we will learn that is a valuable and encouraging message for today. To prepare, read Genesis chapters 6-9.

This will be a great series for those of us who are familiar with many of the sotries of the Bible, but never have actually read or studied them. One goal for 2014 for our church is to become more “biblically literate”- personally growing in our knowledge of Scripture.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

The Lord of the Story– Introduction

January 13, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Series: The Lord of the Story

God has chosen to reveal himself to his creation in many different ways. One specific way is through his Word. In his Word we see many different stories to show us Gods character, love and attributes. We also see ourselves in how people relate to God in Scripture.

In this series we will be looking at several stories from the Old Testament. Many times these stories seem confusing because God seems to act in a way that is very different than how we see Jesus act in the New Testament. Are they two different Gods? Or are we just missing something?

This introduction to the series allows us to see that God does not change– and, hopefully, provides a foundation for us to look at these stories and see God in a whole new way.

January 12th News- New Series!

January 8, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

This week we will begin a new series at Grace Family Fellowship called The Lord of the Story.

In his Word- the Bible- God gives us stories about people just like us facing the kinds of issues that we face. We see how God intervenes and interacts within the story and how those within the story respond. As we study these stories we discover that they are our story as well.

For several weeks we will look at stories from the Old Testament and see, not only how they relate to us today, but how they relate to the bigger story of God’s redemption of a fallen world.

New Year’s 2014-Biblical Resolutions Part 2

January 7, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Series: New Years 2014

It seems that ever time a new year rolls around, we tend to review the past year and plan for the up-coming year. This is a good process, but often times, our plans are so focused on our strengths, efforts, and discipline that we fall short and feel like a failure. What are some Biblical resolutions that can allow us to grow on our dependence and trust in God?In Part 2 of 10 Guidelines from God we see guidelines 6-10.

Happy New Year! 2014 has arrived and we have started a whole new year.

Regardless of how last year went and this year started, we have a reason to celebrate and be glad. Each day is new because of Jesus. Do you realize that? Do you believe it?

I believe that it is true, but I often struggle to live with that kind of optimism and hope and joy.

As we begin 2014, we will focus on trusting God and his word to lead and direct our lives. Last week we renewed some vows by looking at the first five Guidelines from God for 2014. This week we will see the other five.

These guidelines represent some godly resolutions that can transform us each and every day.

Looking forward to Sunday… and 2014!

Grace and peace,

Doug
