November 2nd News- Honor Your Father and Mother

October 30, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Series: The Heart of the Ten Commandments

This week we will look at the fifth commandment found in Exodus 20:12…

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

This week we move from the first four commandments that show how we are to love and relate to God to the second six commandments that show how we are to love and relate to others.

For many, this commandment is particularly difficult to process because they may not have had a parental experience that could be described as honorable. With that reality, how can we approach this commandment with the intent on discovering why God gave it. I do not think we can ignore it- but how can we move forward amidst the many emotions involved.

The first thing we must do is to rely on the Holy Spirit to teach, guide, reveal, and heal. My prayer is that we gain an understanding on God’s intent and then contemplate why this can be so difficult to obey.

Please ponder this commandment before Sunday. Take some time to think about your own experiences- but also reflect on how we can live out this commandment in the midst of our questions and challenges.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

The 10 Commandments-Part 5: The Fourth Commandment

October 26, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Series: The Heart of the 10 Commandments

Exodus 20:8-11

8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lordblessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Often we focus so much on the “what” of this commandment that we miss the “why”.

Series: The Heart of the Ten Commandments

This week we will look at the third commandment found in Exodus 20:8-11…

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

There are a lot of questions that come to mind when we read this commandment. What can we do on the sabbath and what is forbidden? What does it mean to “keep it holy”? Why is it so important to God?

Each of these 10 commandments challenge each of us on many different levels. I believe this one is marginalized and abused by all of us- I know that God has been convicting me about how I approach this command.

But I believe that we will see, once again, that there is incredible beauty and love and grace in these words. And I believe that God has some things to say to you that will bless you this week!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

The 10 Commandments-Part 4: The Third Commandment

October 19, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Series: The Heart of the 10 Commandments

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord

This commandment goes well beyond using the name of the Lord as a swear word. It is all about whether you honor the Lord’s name or dishonor the Lord’s name.

The Heart of the 10 Commandments

This week we will look at the third commandment found in Exodus 20:7…

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God

This is an interesting one because I think we brush past it very quickly. Most of us think this is simply talking about using God’s name when we are swearing (cussing). It is… but there is much more to it than that.

To be honest, preparing for this message has challenged me more than I thought and has uncovered some views that I need to repent of and correct. I think you will be stretched by it, too.

You Shall Not Make For Yourself an Idol

October 12, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Currently, we are studying the Ten Commandments during our Sunday services.

This week we looked at the second commandment where God prohibits making a worship idols. It can be easy to dismiss this commandment as irrelevant when we consider idols as statues, totems, and parts of creation (the sun, moon, etc.). But idols come in many different forms and we should consider what may be idols in our own lives.

Here are some questions to ask to determine who/what may be an idol for you.

1) What do you want, desire, crave, and long for?

2) What have you done to get those things?

3) When do you say, “If only”?

4) What have you done to make “if only” come true?

5) Where do you find refuge, safety, comfort, and escape?

6) Whom must you please?

7) What do you believe you can’t live without?

8) What have you done to get, keep, or protect that thing?

As we ponder these questions honestly, I believe that God will help us to see where we may be struggling with this commandment– and lead us to the only answer to overcoming them: Jesus.

October 12th News- The Second Commandment

Series: The Heart of the 10 Commandments

This week we will look at the second commandment found in Exodus 20:4-6…

You shall not make for yourself an idol.

At first glance, this commandment seem a bit antiquated and perhaps even irrelevant.

After all, we don’t worship the moon or dolphins or the wind like the ancients did. We’re beyond that, right?!?

As Lee Corso would say: “Not so fast my friend!”

This commandment has incredibly relevant applications for us today and we need to understand what it means and how we can obey it.

October 5th News- The First Commandment

October 1, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Series: The Heart of the 10 Commandments

This week we will look at the first commandment found in Exodus 20:2-3:

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

“You shall have no other gods before me.

This is a pretty clear directive, isn’t it? But it is challenging as well.

How can obey this commandment. How does Jesus fulfill it (remember, last Sunday we saw that Jesus came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it). These are important questions to ponder.

To prepare, read Exodus 20 again. Also read Exodus 3. This is the story of God appearing to Moses in the burning bush- and it will shed light (pun intended!) on the first commandment.

So what’s the deal? Why did God give them to us? What do they mean?

*****REMINDER:*****

We will return to our normal service time of 9:15 am.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug
