January 31th News: “Hallowed Be Thy Name”

January 28, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

Series: The Lord’s Prayer.

Last week we saw that Jesus wants us to begin our prayers by calling upon our Father. There is a closeness and intimacy in this that gives us confidence to approach God.

This week, Jesus tells us to also remember who God is by remembering his name with great reverence. What does that mean? How do we do that?

To prepare, read Exodus 3:1-15. This is the story of God appearing to Moses in a burning bush. It is also a story where God reveals his name.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

The Lord’s Prayer 3: Our Father in Heaven

Series: The Lord’s Prayer

Message: Our Father in Heaven

Jesus begins the Lord’s Prayer with the words, “Our Father…” This points to the intimate relationship Christians have with God the Father. But what kind of Father is God? In this message, we look at God’s Word to answer that question.

January 24th News: “Our Father…”

January 21, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

Series: The Lord’s Prayer.

This week we will begin looking specifically at the words in The Lord’s Prayer. It begins, “Our Father…”. As we learned last week, this is extraordinary. Jesus actually tells us that we can approach God as our Father. What does that mean? How does that effect the way we pray? What kind of Father is God?

To prepare, read Luke 11:1-13.We have looked at this passage before, but pay special attention to the two illustrations that Jesus offers after he has given the words of the prayer– they tell us something important about our heavenly Father.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Remembering Mike Tomko

January 12, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

Last Thursday, our friend and brother, Mike Tomko, went home to be with Jesus.

I wanted to let you read a bit about Mike from the Virginian Pilot’s obituary published last Sunday, January 10, 2016…

***********

Captain Mike Tomko

Virginia Beach – Michael “Captain Mike” Tomko, 55, went to be with Jesus on January 7, 2016 in the care of the Sentara Hospice House, with his sister Pat Cross at his side. Michael was born June 29, 1960 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital to Virginia & James Tomko.

Michael was a loving husband, father, brother, son, papa & friend. He leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Lydia Tomko & their three children. His daughter Jessica Adair, her husband Stephen Adair & their two children Mycah & Sawyer Adair. His daughter Meghan Tomko, her Fiancé Antone Nixon & son Maddox Nixon; & Mike’s only son Dylan Tomko. He also leaves behind his mother Virginia Tomko, brother James Tomko & sisters Patricia Cross & Donna Tomko.

Mike owned a successful charter boat business, known as the Four Winds, for over 30 years. He was also a retired fire fighter for the Chesapeake Fire Department. His most recent career path led him to Real Estate where he had the honor of obtaining the circle of excellence within the first full year of his career. Mike was very passionate about loving others & was named Volunteer of the Year, twice, at Bayside Elementary. He loved to spend his days there, having lunch with the children. He also won the Virginia Beach Rotary Club School Volunteer of the Year in 2015.

We would like to thank the Virginia Beach General & Norfolk General Neurology floors for their care. Most of all, we would like to thank the Sentara Hospice House for the loving care they gave Mike during this difficult time. His entire family was by his side every step of the way & we are so thankful that we have so many great memories to carry on with.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, January 16th from 11:00AM-2:00PM at the Lesner Inn located at 3319 Shore Dr. VB, VA. In lieu of flowers, we would like everyone to consider donating to the Bayside PTA by writing a check made payable to Bayside Elementary for the Mike Tomko Memorial at 5649 Bayside Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23455.

January 10th News: Teach Us to Pray

January 9, 2016 by · Leave a Comment

This Sunday, we will begin a new series called The Lord’s Prayer.

To begin the New Year, we had a prayer service last week. It was a great time for us, as a faith community, to come before God together in prayer.

This week we will start a series on prayer that will focus on the example Jesus gave his disciples when they made a simple, but profound, request:

“Lord, teach us to pray.”

He responded by giving them an example– something we now refer to as The Lord’s Prayer.

You are probably familiar with it. You know the words and, perhaps, can recite it form memory. But what does it mean? And how can we understand it more fully to discover a greater power in our prayers?

Lord, teach us to pray… That has been my prayer for myself and Grace Family Fellowship for 2016. Sunday we begin the adventure together.

To prepare, read Matthew 6:5-15 and Luke 11:1-13. (These are the two spots where we the Lord’s Prayer in scripture)

I also want to let you know that Mike Tomko– a part of this church for about the last 4 years– has gone home to Jesus. He passed away last Thursday at 3:30am. As difficult as it is for his family and friends to say goodbye, it is, indeed, a time to rejoice because Mike is in the arms of his savior and deliverer. Mike knew where he was going and proclaimed his faith in Jesus Christ to all. We are sad… He is completely healed.

The memorial service for Mike will be at the Lesner Inn (off Shore Dr. by the Lesner bridge– next to Bubba’s) on Saturday, January 16th from 11:00am-12:00pm. There will also be a reception from 12:00pm-2:00pm at the same location.

Please keep Mike’s family in prayer as they walk through this difficult time (wife-Lydia, daughters- Jessica & Megan; son-Dylan). They are an incredible family who lost an incredible husband and father.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Finally, the will be a church brunch following the service. If you are able, bring something to share with everyone– or just bring yourself and enjoy food and fellowship together!

Looking forward to Sunday!
