October 8th News: Follow Me– Announcing Radical Humility

Series: Follow Me

Message: Announcing Radical Humility

Last week, we saw that Jesus announced a radical ministry focusing on these areas:

  • to proclaim good news to the poor.
  • to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
  • to proclaim recovery of sight for the blind,
  • to set the oppressed free,
  • to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Seems simple enough, right? So why do we have such a hard time doing it? I think we struggle in two related areas: pride and humility. Jesus calls us to be people of radical humility.

This week we will explore that idea a bit– because we live in a culture that desperately need us to live this out.

To prepare, read Matthew 5:43-47, Matthew 7:1-4, and Philippians 2:1-4.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

October 1st News: Follow Me– Announcing Radical Ministry

Series: Follow Me

Message: Announcing Radical Ministry

This Sunday, we will continue to look at the life that Jesus modeled for us. As we see how he lived, we see how we can live as well.

After Jesus is tempted by Satan in the desert, he begins teaching and preaching throughout Galilee. In time he returns to his home town– Nazareth.

In a very dramatic way, Jesus announces the focus of his ministry– he announces what he is going to do. And it is incredibly radical. It is also important for us to understand today– especially with everything that is going on around us.

To prepare, read Luke 4:14-30. As you read, notice how the people react.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

September 17th News: Follow Me– The Temptation of Jesus

Series: Follow Me

Message: The Temptation of Jesus

This Sunday, we will continue to look at the life that Jesus modeled for us. As we see how he lived, we see how we can live as well.

Two weeks ago we looked at the Baptism of Jesus as he heard God say,

“This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

God is pleased with Jesus before any recorded miracles, or healings, or preaching. Why? Because Jesus is God’s son. He’s pleased with us too. Why? Because we are his!

But there is opposition to this truth. Satan does not want us to know the truth about God and what he thinks about us. He wants us to doubt God (and he does a pretty good job at this). God knows about Satan’s strategy, however, and he works things out so that we can not only stand firm against Satan’s lies, but actually grow in faith when we encounter them.

That’s what we will see this week when Jesus is tempted by Satan in the desert.

To prepare, read Luke 4:1-14.

I also want thank Dallas for preaching last Sunday– and everyone who made the service possible in my absence. We had a wonderful time at my niece’s wedding in Philadelphia.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

September 10th News: Follow Me– The Baptism of Jesus

Series: Follow Me

Message: The Baptism of Jesus

This Sunday, we will look at the beginning of Jesus’ formal earthly ministry– his baptism.

As you read the accounts, ask yourself these questions:

  • Why did Jesus have to get baptized?
  • What happened and what does it mean?
  • Why did God say what he said?
  • What does it mean to me?

Also, reflect upon the verse that we focused on last Sunday (John 14:12):

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

To prepare, read Matthew 3:13-17, Mark 1:9-11, and Luke 3:21-38.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug
