Spiritual Gifts

October 12, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

How can I discover my spiritual gifts?

Last week we talked about how God gives spiritual gifts to those in the church so that they can be used to build up the body of Christ.

Below is some information you can use to help discover what your gifts are– they are the notes we will use in this week’s Bible Study.

1 Corinthians 12:1

Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.

There are many different tools to help us discover our spiritual gifts. I have selected an on-line tool that I found to be easy to use and helpful.

Think of this as a starting point to learn about different spiritual gifts and the gifts you may have. The best way to determine spiritual gifts is not a test or assessment like this, but rather, serving others in the body and having them affirm your gifts as you use them.

Go to:                        www.spiritualgiftstest.com/test/adult

Click on the “Continue as a Guest” button.

The test will come up.

Answer each of the questions and follow the prompts.

Print out your results  (there is a “Print your Results” button on right side)

Read the “definitions” of your top 3 gifts

Bring these results to the small group on Wednesday (10/14/15) to discuss.

Here are some questions to consider:

1)    Was this a “hard” test for you to take? If “yes” why do you think it was?

2)    Do these gifts surprise you? Why? Why not?

3)    Can you think of an example when you were able to use this gift to serve others in the church/body?

4)    How could you use these gifts to “build up” those around you in the church?

5)    How have you seen others use their gifts to build you up?

6)    How can you use your spiritual gift this week for the benefit of others in your church?

This week we will continue our study of the Book of Acts. To prepare, read Acts 16. There are three stories about people who encounter God and are ministered to by Paul and Silas.

As you read these stories, think about what they mean to you. How are you like Paul? What kinds of people do you regularly encounter?

May God bless you this day– and I hope to see you Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Get Out of Here Sandy!

This is a phrase that comes easily to me because I have a sister named Sandy who i said that to a lot when I was a little kid. Now I don’t say that to my sister but to hurricanes named Sandy.

As of this time WE WILL HAVE OUR REGULAR CHURCH SERVICE TOMORROW.

I also want you to know that we need to start our services no later than 9:15am because of the Hilltop Community Church service that follows ours.

Happy New Year! Welcome 2012!

This Sunday we are meeting and eating to ring in the new year. That’s right. Come and enjoy a time of pot luck breakfast stuff, some scripture, and some prayer.

If you can, bring something to share. If that’s tough, then just bring yourself– I know that some folks are bringing things to eat.

Also, if you are available tomorrow (Saturday) from 7-9:30ish, GFF is serving breakfast at the PIN Ministry. We gather at Beach Petecostal Church at 15th and Baltic, prepare breakfast and then serve and clean up. It is a great time of helping those in need.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

For the last two weeks we have seen angelic encounters with Mary and Joseph. In each case, the angel delivered incredible news that reveals who Jesus is and what he is going to do.

To Mary, Gabriel says that Jesus would be God in the flesh and he is a king who will reign forever (Luke 1:26-38). To Joseph, an angel of the Lord says that Jesus was God and would “save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:18-24).

This week, we will look at another angelic encounter. This time it is with a group of shepherds on the night of Jesus’ birth. As you read the familiar words of Luke 2:1-20, see if you can identify more about who the baby is and what he will do (has done). Pay close attention to the angels’ words.

Grace2F Happenings

Christmas Caroling at Russell House

Last year we had a large group of folks go to Russell House (a government subsidized low-income housing project) to sing Christmas carols to (and the with) the residents. It was a blast. We want to do that again this year, so here are the facts:

When:  Sunday Dec 18th at 2:45– This will be right after I preach at the Russell House church service so there will be some folks who may join us right away.

Where: Russell House. It’s just across the street from Hilltop Community Church down toward Hilltop (the entrance is right at Wolfsnare). More specifically, meet at the front door and everyone can enter together (I will already be inside and can let you in when the church service concludes)

What: Sing Carols… Even if you can’t sing. I mean Chris Adams did it last year (and he even tried to clap). Bring a smile too– the residents love that!

Christmas Eve Service

This year, all three churches that meet at Hilltop Community Church will be combing to celebrate Christmas Eve together. The service will be in the sanctuary and will start at 5:00pm and end around 6:00.

Full childcare will be provided (according to Crosscurrent website 🙂

Last week we continued our journey through Christmas passages by looking at Gabriel’s announcement to Mary… “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Incredible words proclaiming that God was going to be with Mary in a very special way.

But the same is true of us. We are highly favored– or “highly graced” by God’s unmerited favor in the gift of Jesus. The Lord is also with us– through the gift of his Holy Spirit.

This week, we will look at Joseph. Read Matthew 1:18-25 and try to place yourself in Joesph’s shoes (or sandals as the case may be). How would you have felt and reacted? And pay close attention to what the angel says to Joesph, because– you guessed it– God is telling us the same thing!

My prayer this season for me and my family– and for you– is to see the Christmas story in a whole new light. It is not just a celebration of a past event (although it certa inily is that); it is a celebration of a present reality and a future hope… all wrapped up in a manger.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug
