We are currently in a series that deals with What It Means to Be a Disciple of Jesus.

What does a follower of Jesus look like.? What do they do? How do they act? What motivates and drives them?

Last week we saw that disciples must be Students— and one of the best ways to live this out is to read the Bible. God’s Word (The Bible) is a living thing– and it will transform our minds as we experience it.

This week we will see that a disciple is also a Prayer (pray-er). Disciples of Jesus pray.

If you have been in church for any period of time, this is not a new idea. We know that we should pray. But we also struggle with this  idea.

Sunday we shall see two things that prevent an effective prayer life and a couple things that will encourage an effective prayer life.

To prepare, read Matthew 6:5-14 and Luke 18:1-8.

Try applying what we talked about last week… When you read these passages, ask yourself these questions:

1) What does it say?

2) What does it mean?

3) What does it mean to me?

Also, I want to encourage you to pray that God would open your heart and mind to these principles of discipleship. Pray that he would increase your desire to read his Word and pray!

Looking forward to Sunday!!

Grace and peace,

Doug

This week we beginning a new series called What It Means to Be a Disciple of Jesus.

What does a follower of Jesus look like.? What do they do? How do they act? What motivates and drives them?

This is an important question to consider once you understand the gospel of Jesus. In the New Testament, Jesus gathered twelve men whom we refer to as disciples. We know that they changed the world… We know that they exhibited certain traits and characteristics… We know that we are called to be disciples as well.

For the next few weeks we are going to take a Biblical and practical look at what it means to be a disciple.

This week, we will see that a disciple is a Student. A student is taught something and, hopefully, learns something. How does that happen for a follower of Jesus?  How can we actively pursue this idea of being a student?

To prepare, class, you have an assignment (of course you have an assignment!):

1) Read Matthe

w 28:18-20

2) Read Matthew 7:24-27

3) Think about what significance these passage have in the idea of dealing with What It Means to be a Disciple of Jesus.
Let’s take this educational field trip together and see how being a disciple can transform our lives and then the lives of others.

Looking forward to Sunday!!

Grace and peace,

Doug

This week we are finishing a series called, What Is the Gospel?

Last week we began to look at the whole story of God– starting in Genesis 1 with the Creation. In that message, we heard some bad news… Because of our rebellion against God– because we sin by wanting to make ourselves god– we are separated from him.

But remember, the word “gospel” means Good News. To appreciate good news, we must first understand the bad news. Well, this week we will hear the good news of what God has done so that we could be reunited with him forever! It is, indeed, an incredible story.

I hope that you will be able to make it to church this week to hear His-story and gain a deeper understanding of how much you are loved by your God!

Looking forward to Sunday!!

Grace and peace,

Doug

For the last 3 weeks, we’ve been in a series called What is the Gospel? and we’ve seen that the gospel has many different aspects.

This week, we will look at the story of the gospel– the whole story. You will see that the Bible is really all about the gospel– from start to finish.

Also, remember that the Brownings are hosting a potluck brunch after the service.

Grace and peace,

This Sunday we will continue our three-part series called What Is the Gospel?

Two weeks ago, we talked about the Historical Aspect of the Gospel. The reality is that the gospel is news about what has already been done, not advice about how to live.

The gospel nutshell we discovered (with the help of Pastor Tim Keller) was:

Jesus Christ lived the life you should have lived and died the death you should have died as your substitute—in your place—so that God can receive you not for your record and your sake but for Jesus’ record and his sake.

Last Sunday, we talked about the Sonship (or Identity) Aspect of the Gospel. This one, too, is a unique aspect of Christianity– and must be understood so that a believer can walk in freedom and joy as God desires. This aspect focuses on the fact that the gospel is a  status you receive now, not just a reward you receive later.

In other words, the gospel changes your identity entirely.

Gospel in a nutshell:

You are more wicked and flawed than you ever dared believe, but you more loved and accepted than you ever dared hope—at the same time.

Finally, this week, we will talk about the Kingdom aspect of the gospel– and see that the gospel represents an almost total reversal of the world’s values. In other words, the gospel shows us (and enables us) to live “right-side up” in an “up-side down” world.

To prepare, read Philippians 2:1-11.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

This Sunday we will continue our three-part series called What Is the Gospel?

Last week, we talked about the Historical Aspect of the Gospel. The reality is that the gospel is news about what has already been done, not advice about how to live. Although Jesus does offer good advice that can help us live fuller more beautiful lives, “Gospel” means “good news”– and news is something that is already done.

This is extremely important and is an element that makes Christianity very different from other religions in the world.

The gospel nutshell we discovered (with the help of Pastor Tim Keller) was:

Jesus Christ lived the life you should have lived and died the death you should have died as your substitute—in your place—so that God can receive you not for your record and your sake but for Jesus’ record and his sake.

This Sunday, we will talk about the Sonship (or Identity) Aspect of the Gospel. This one, too, is a unique aspect of Christianity– and must be understood so that a believer can walk in freedom and joy as God desires.

To prepare for the message, read Ephesians 1:3-14, John 1:9-13, and Romans 8:14-17. As you read, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What are these passages saying?
  2. What do they have in common?
  3. What do they mean for me?

Come see the incredible wonder of the gospel!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

This Sunday we will begin a new three-part series called What Is the Gospel?

During this series we will look at three different facet of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In Romans 1:16 Paul makes this extraordinary pronouncement:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

The gospel is powerful. It is not only the beginning of the Christian life, it is the entire focus of the Christian life. What does that mean? How do we keep the gospel as the central part of our lives?

That’s what we will be talking about over the next 3 weeks as we look at 3 district and practical aspects of the GOSPEL…

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug
