July 9th News: Jesus Before Caiaphas

July 7, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

Series: Walking with Jesus– 24 Hours That Changed The World

Message: Jesus Before Caiaphas

After Annas, the former high priest, could not find anything with which to charge Jesus, Jesus is sent to Caiaphas the current High Priest. With him are members of the Sanhedrin and they continue to search for something to charge against Jesus.

In this second Jewish/religious trial, we see the frustration of the religious leaders and the calm determination of Jesus.

To prepare, read Matthew 26:57-67 and Mark 14:53-65. You will see that these accounts are similar with one small difference (that is very important).

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

July 2nd News: Jesus Before Annas

June 30, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

Series: Walking with Jesus– 24 Hours That Changed The World

Message: Jesus Before Annas

This week we see the first of 6 trials Jesus must go through on his way to the cross. As he stands before Annas, the former High Priest, he is questioned to determine a charge against him. Jesus and Annas have a history and this plays a role in this particular trial.

To prepare, read John 18:12-14 and 18:19-24. Also, read John 2:13-22 and Matthew 21:12-17. Although these may seem unrelated to John 18 they are not. Come this Sunday and see why.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

June 25th News: Jesus Is Arrested

June 23, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

Series: Walking with Jesus– 24 Hours That Changed The World

Message: Jesus Is Arrested

This week we return to the Garden of Gethsemane and find a large group of people looking for Jesus. They are ready for a fight and a hunt– expecting Jesus to run or hide. Jesus, however, does neither.

When Jesus is arrested we will see his glory, his power, and his love against a backdrop of evil, injustice, and betrayal.

To prepare, read John 18:1-11. You can also read the account in the other three gospels: Matt. 26:47-56; Mark 14:43-52; and Luke 22:47-53.

I encourage you to read each of these passages and see how Jesus moves purposefully to the cross.

Reminder! We have moved to a new location…

We meet every Sunday at 10:00 AM at School of Rock in Virginia Beach, located a block from Great Neck Rd (Corner Great Neck and Mill Dam).

Looking forward to Sunday!

June 18th News: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

June 14, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

Series: Walking with Jesus– 24 Hours That Changed The World

Message: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

Since January, we have been walking with Jesus throughout the Gospels. Now we focusing on the last 24 hours before the crucifixion. Last week we watched as Jesus lovingly washed his disciples feet–cleaning away the dirt and grime we all pick up in a world corrupted by sin.

This week, we will walk with Jesus to a garden outside the walls of Jerusalem near the Mount of Olives. We will see him in the moments before his arrest and continue to see how he loves his disciples– and us– “to the end”.

The account of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane is recorded in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. We will focus primarily on Mark’s account (Mark 14:32-42). I would encourage you to also read Matthew 26:36-46 and Luke 22: 39-46.

Reminder! We have moved to a new location…

We meet every Sunday at 10:00 AM at School of Rock in Virginia Beach, located a block from Great Neck Rd (Corner Great Neck and Mill Dam).

Series: The Lord’s Prayer.

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

This Sunday, we move into the second part of the Lord’s Prayer. We need begin to petition, or ask, for specific things from God. As I think about the idea of daily bread, I realize that we are a very needy people. There are so many things that we can’t control in our lives and we need a loving father to provide for us, to comfort us, and to protect us.

Are you going through a difficulty right now? If so, this idea of asking for your “daily bread” is God’s answer for you.

To prepare, read Matthew 6:25-33, Exodus 16:1-36, and John 6:25-35. See if you can discover how each of these passages are related, and come ready to hear from God’s Word how needy people can live with hope, joy, and confidence!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Series: The Lord’s Prayer.

Thy Will Be Done

The climax of the first part of the Lord’s Prayer is the phrase, Thy Will Be Done.

When we think of those words, there is an obvious desire for God’s good and perfect will to be done on this earth as in heaven. But what happens when God’s will is not the same as our will. How can we pray these words with peace and hope if it means that we may have to set aside what we want to happen in our lives and the world.

This a powerful phrase that we must wrestle with before we can move on to asking for daily bread and protection.

To prepare for this Sunday, read Matthew 26:36-46 and see an example of Jesus praying this exact prayer. Also read 2 Kings 6:8-18.

There is snow in the forecast, but it should be over in time for us to be able to meet on Sunday. I want to encourage you to read the scripture above and come ready to hear why we should and how we can pray thy will be done with joy and confidence!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug
