Series: Foundations for the New Year

Message: 10 guidelines from God

As we continue to look at foundational truths to build our lives upon, we will hear from God himself through his Word. Over the next two weeks we will ponder 10 Guidelines from God that can enable us to surrender to his will and ways.

I hope that you all survived the Blizzard of 2018. I have been out on the roads today and they are drivable, but still slick. I understand that the temperature is not expected to rise greatly until Monday. Right now, we are planning to hold our service at the usual time . I hope to visit the School of Rock tomorrow (Saturday) to see the conditions of the parking lot. If there are issues, I will let you know.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Last week, we began a new series at Grace Family Fellowship called The Lord of the Story.

I had planned on starting the series with the story of Noah and the Flood. But as I was thinking about it, I decided that we needed a bit more of an introduction into our look at God in the Old Testament. The reason? Well, sometimes look at the God of the Old Testament with fear and trepedation. He can appear unfair, angry, and, well, kinda mean. But when we see Jesus, we have a different picture. Kind, gentle, merciful…

As we look at stories form the Old Testament, we must keep in mind that the God of the Old Testament and God of the New Testament are the same. And over the next several weeks we are going to see that.

In addition to Sunday mornings, we will use our Wednesday night Bible studies to look more deeply into each story and see how they can apply to various areas in our lives.

This week we will look at the story of Noah and the Flood. Although most of us know the basics of this story, we will learn that is a valuable and encouraging message for today. To prepare, read Genesis chapters 6-9.

This will be a great series for those of us who are familiar with many of the sotries of the Bible, but never have actually read or studied them. One goal for 2014 for our church is to become more “biblically literate”- personally growing in our knowledge of Scripture.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

January 12th News- New Series!

January 8, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

This week we will begin a new series at Grace Family Fellowship called The Lord of the Story.

In his Word- the Bible- God gives us stories about people just like us facing the kinds of issues that we face. We see how God intervenes and interacts within the story and how those within the story respond. As we study these stories we discover that they are our story as well.

For several weeks we will look at stories from the Old Testament and see, not only how they relate to us today, but how they relate to the bigger story of God’s redemption of a fallen world.

Happy New Year! 2014 has arrived and we have started a whole new year.

Regardless of how last year went and this year started, we have a reason to celebrate and be glad. Each day is new because of Jesus. Do you realize that? Do you believe it?

I believe that it is true, but I often struggle to live with that kind of optimism and hope and joy.

As we begin 2014, we will focus on trusting God and his word to lead and direct our lives. Last week we renewed some vows by looking at the first five Guidelines from God for 2014. This week we will see the other five.

These guidelines represent some godly resolutions that can transform us each and every day.

Looking forward to Sunday… and 2014!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Well, it’s that time again…

We’ve celebrated Christmas and now turn our sights on a brand new year. Many times, this is a period of reflection on the past year and planning for the new year. In that process, we must consider what God is telling us.

For the next two weeks we will look at some biblical principles that will guide us into the new year. They are familiar– but worthy of remembering once again because we some often forget.

Join us as we look at some godly resolutions for 2014 and review what happened in 2013.

Looking forward to Sunday… and 2014!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Last week we finished going over some Biblical New Year’s Resolutions. Again, most resolutions fail because they rely on our efforts to be fulfilled… and we constantly fall short, don’t we?

God want us to rely on Him— for everything. In fact, I was reminded that we sometimes change our resolutions because we know how difficult they are or how often we have failed to keep them when I saw this picture last week:

In our frustration we can surrender to what we think it the truth about ourselves. But God wants us to know the real truth– about him and our relationship to him.

Here are the 10 guidelines we went over…

1. QUIT WORRYING:

2. PUT IT ON THE LIST:

3. TRUST ME:

4. LEAVE IT ALONE:

5. TALK TO ME

6. HAVE FAITH

7. SHARE

8. BE PATIENT

9. BE KIND

10. LOVE YOURSELF

This Sunday, we will follow up on the last Guideline– “Love Yourself”. One the surface this may seem a bit ego-centric or self-centered, but the real idea is for you to understand how God sees you… and then accept and receive that. I have a friend who has said that two of the hardest things for Christians to really accept and believe are that they are forgiven and loved by God. In fact, many Christians would find this thought incredible: God likes you.

What do you think? Your answer is incredibly important because it will determine how Looking forward to Sunday (and 2013)!!!

Doug

Last week we talked about the problem with most New year’s resolutions. As well-intentioned and sincere as they are they still have one fatal flaw: they rely on self. They depend on your strength, your faithfulness, your discipline, your abilities. And that is why they so often fail. I love this picture I came across while preparing for last week’s message. It is humorous, yet painfully real. Take some time to look at it and see if it seems familiar…

Jesus challenges this idea when he says,  “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matt. 16:24). This is challenging because it seems to be the exact opposite of the way things work in this world. And, actually, that’s true. The spiritual world is much different that the physical world.

So what should we do? Stay stuck where we are or seek improvement. The Bible is clear that God has wonderful plans for us and he will bring them to pass. The key for us is to believe him. Believe that he has already made us into who we were designed to be… Believe that he is working out all things for his glory… Believe that he has incredible good works set up for us to participate in– and he will lead us to them as we go through out the day… Believe that God the Father is as pleased with us right now as he is with Jesus.

When we believe those things, our lives will be different.

Do you believe that?

This week we will look at the second 5 biblical guidelines for 2013 that will change everything for each of us. This is going to be a great year…

Looking forward to Sunday (and 2013)!!!

Grace and peace,
Doug

Well, Christmas is over and we now look towards the beginning of a whole new year. Although there is a lot of uncertainty in the world of politics, financial institutions, the economy, the Middle East, our schools and dozens of other areas in life, we still all head into 2013… The question is will you be hopeful or hopeless; fearful or fearless; cautious or energized. The way you answer these questions depends a lot on the foundation upon which you’ve built your life.

We will talk about that for the next couple of weeks as we transition into a new year and, perhaps, a new beginning. It all depends on your foundation.

Looking forward to Sunday (and 2013)!!!

A New New Years

January 7, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Last week in church we talked about New Year’s Resolutions…

I mentioned that a big problem that I’ve had in the past is that most resolutions focus on ME and what I am going to do to generate change in my life. The issue here is that the reason I’m making a resolution is because I have failed at the same thing in the past. In other words, what makes me think this time will be any different?

For the last few years I have tried something different. I look to God rather than myself.

In Zechariah, God says, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”

If we believe what God says here, we realize that our efforts will always fall short. Maybe we need to take God at his word.

So… I come back to the same thoughts each year in an effort to remind myself of the true source of my life. And that leads me to the same resolution each year:

New Year’s Resolution: TRUST GOD

 –      Trust God’s strength—not your own

–      Trust God’s faithfulness—not your own

–      Trust God’s plan—not your own

Why?

–      Because God has proven he is STRONG, FAITHFUL, and TRUSTWORTHY

 –      In history and in our lives

It also leads me to something that someone gave me a few years ago that helps me meditate on incredible truths that transform my life. I hope they encourage you as we head into 2011…

Ten Guidelines from God
Creation_Of_Adam

Effective immediately, please be aware that there are changes YOU need to make in YOUR life. These changes need to be completed in order that I may fulfill My promises to you to grant you peace, joy and happiness in this life. I apologize for any inconvenience, but after all that I am doing, this seems very little to ask of you. Please, follow these 10 guidelines…

1. QUIT WORRYING:

Life has dealt you a blow and all you do is sit and worry. Have you forgotten that I am here to take all your burdens and carry them for you? Or do you just enjoy fretting over every little thing that comes your way?

Matthew 6

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on… which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.

2. PUT IT ON THE LIST:

Something needs done or taken care of. Put it on the list. No, not to-do-listYOUR list… Put it on MY to-do-list. Let ME be the one to take care of the problem. I can’t help you until you turn it over to Me. And although My to-do-list is long, I am after all… God. I can take care of anything you put into My hands. In fact, if the truth were ever really known, I take care of a lot of things for you that you never even realize.

1 Peter 5:6-7

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

3. TRUST ME:

Once you’ve trustgiven your burdens to Me, quit trying to take them back. Trust in Me. Have the faith that I will take care of all your needs, your problems and your trials. Problems with the kids? Put them on My list. Problem with finances? Put it on My list. Problems with your emotional roller coaster? For My sake, put it on My list. I want to help you. All you have to do is ask.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

4. LEAVE IT ALONE:

Don’t wake up one morning and say, “Well, I’m feeling much stronger now, I think I can handle it from here.” Why do you think you are feeling stronger now? It’s simple. You gave Me your burdens and I’m taking care of them. I also renew your strength and cover you in my peace. Don’t you know that if I give you these problems back, you will be right back where you started? Leave them with Me and forget about them. Just let Me do my job.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

5. TALK TO ME:

I want you to forget a lot of things. Forget what was making you crazy. Forget the worry and the fretting because you know I’m in control. But there’s one thing I pray you never forget. Please, don’t forget to talk to Me – OFTEN! I love YOU! I want to hear your voice. I want you to include Me in on the things going on in your life. I want to hear you talk about your friends and family. Prayer is simply you having a conversation with Me. I want to be your dearest friend.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

6. HAVE FAITfaithH:

I see a lot of things from up here that you can’t see from where you are. Have faith in Me that I know what I’m doing. Trust Me; you wouldn’t want the view from My eyes. I will continue to care for you, watch over you, and meet your needs. You only have to trust Me. Although I have a much bigger task than you, it seems as if you have so much trouble just doing your simple part. How hard can trust be?

 Hebrews 11:1-2

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

7. SHARE:

You were taught to share when you were only two years old. When did you forget? That rule still applies. Share with those who are less fortunate than you. Share your joy with those who need encouragement. Share your laughter with those who haven’t heard any in such a long time. Share your tears with those who have forgotten how to cry. Share your faith with those who have none.

One Anothers in the New Testament

 John 13:34-35

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. [35] By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Romans 12:10

Be devoted to one another…Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

 Romans 12:16

Live in harmony with one another

Romans 14:13

stop passing judgment on one another

Romans 15:7

    Accept one another

 Romans 15:14

instruct one another.

1 Cor. 1:10

agree with one another

Galatians 5:13

serve one another

Ephes. 4:32

Be kind and compassionate to one another…forgiving one another

Ephes. 5:21

    Submit to one another

Col. 3:13

Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another

Col. 3:16

admonish one another with all wisdom

1 Thes. 5:11

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up

Hebrews 10:24

spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

1 Peter 3:8

live in harmony with one another

1 Peter 4:9

Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

  Peter 5:5

clothe yourselves with humility toward one another

  John 1:7

have fellowship with one another

8. BE PATIENT:

patience1I managed to fix it so in just one lifetime you could have so many diverse experiences. You grow from a child to an adult, have children, change jobs many times, learn many trades, travel to so many places, meet thousands of people, and experience so much. How can you be so impatient then when it takes Me a little longer than you expect to handle something on My to-do-list? Trust in My timing, for My timing is perfect. Just because I created the entire universe in only six days, everyone thinks I should always rush, rush, rush.

Isaiah 30:18

18 Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.

9. BE KIND:

Be kind to others, for I love them just as much as I love you. They may not dress like you, or talk like you, or live the same way you do, but I still love you all. Please try to get along, for My sake. I created each of you different in some way. It would be too boring if you were all identical. Please, know I love each of your differences.

Philippians 2:1-4

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

10. LOVE YOURSELF:

As much as I love you, how can you not love yourself? You were created by me for one reason only— to be loved, and to love in return. I am a God of Love. Love Me. Love your neighbors. But also love yourself. It makes My heart ache when I see you so angry with yourself when things go wrong. You are very precious to me. Don’t ever forget…

Colossians 3:12

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,

 new life2
