Series-The Book of James: Faith + Action

This Sunday we will conclude our study of the Book of James by seeing another area of life that we are called to submit to God. Last week we talked about submitting our treasure– money and possessions– to God. This is no easy task. And this week, we address, perhaps, an even more difficult area of life that we need to submit to God: suffering.

James ends his book where he started by talking about trials and testing. He was writing to Christians who were undergoing great persecution and suffering, and James wanted to focus their attention on God.

He is writing to us as well. We all experience suffering in life. In fact, many of us are in the midst of very difficult and trying situations right now. What does James say to us?

To prepare for this Sunday, read James 5:7-20 and James 1:2-4 (you will see how he begins and ends on the same topic). And come Sunday ready to lay whatever you are dealing with at the foot of the cross. My prayer is that you will find encouragement and hope in the words James shares– the words God wants you to hear this Sunday.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Nehemiah Part 11– The Gates of Jerusalem 3

This message is a third in a look at the gates of Jerusalem during Nehemiah’s time. We can learn a lot about the Christian life form each of the gates that were repaired and restored in Nehemiah 3.

Nehemiah Part 10– The Gates of Jerusalem 2

April 29, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

In our study of Nehemiah, we have been learning some basic principles of the Christian life.

In this week’s message, we are looking specifically at the gates of Jerusalem in nehemiah’s time and the order in whcih they were repaired. As we do that, we see that the gates themselves become an interesting and powerful metaphor for growth in the Christian life– for the discipleship process.

This message is the second of four on the gates of Jerusalem (unfortunately, the audio for the first one didn’t come out well enough to post).

WARNING:

YOU MAY NEED TO ADJUST THE VOLUME WHEN THE MESSAGE BEGINS BECAUSE IT WAS RECORDED WITH A HIGH GAIN. (if you don’t know what that means, you will once you listen!)

This week we are continuing our series in the Book of Nehemiah entitled Hand me Another Brick. Last week, we focused on Nehemiah’s prayer in Nehemiah 1:5-11. We discovered 6 elements to effective prayer– and I thought that I would remind us of those points to consider as we go through our week…

6 elements of effective prayer

1) Praise the characteristics or attributes of God

2) Confess the characteristics and attributes of man

3) Remember God’s promise

4) Receive God’s promise

5) Make a specific request

6) Keep asking

A couple of key questions to consider as we think about prayer:

“Is there a limit to God’s power?”

“Is there a limit to God’s love and compassion?”

This week, we will grab another “brick” from the story of Nehemiah from Nehemiah 2:1-9. Read these verses to prepare for Sunday and see what God reveals to you about this story, your own life, and his incredible grace in Jesus.

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug
