March 15th News- Blessed are the Persecuted Part 2

March 12, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Series:BE-Atitudes

This week we will continue our series on the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5:1-12.

As we listen to Jesus’ words here, we discover that he is describing a new way for us to live right-side-up in an up-side-down world.

The eighth Beatitude is found Matthew 5:10-12

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Last week in part 1 of “Blessed are the Persecuted”, we talked about how God works in powerful ways as his followers experience persecution. We also saw that a key to enduring persecution is by keeping our minds and hearts focused on heaven.

This week, in part 2, we will look at a Biblical character as he endures persecution– and honestly struggles with it. Yet, in his story, I believe that God provides some principles that can help us all as we face persecution of various kinds.

To prepare read the story of John the Baptist (Luke 1; John 1:19-34; John 3:22-36; Matthew 11:1-11; Matthew 14:3-12).

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

In this last Beatitude, Jesus presents a challenging reality for all of those who follow him. He tells us that persecution will come– and that we are to rejoice in the midst of this persecution. These are incredible words. How is this possible? Why does it happen? How are we to live in this reality?

We will spend the next two weeks pondering those questions. I believe this Beatitude is especially relevant for two reasons:

1) Events taking place in the world right now

2) The approach of Easter

To prepare, read Matthew 5:10-12, John 15:18-20, John 3:16-21, and Hebrews 12:1-3.

Also…REMEMBER TO MOVE YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD ON SATURDAY NIGHT!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

March 1st News- Blessed are the Peacemakers Part 3

February 27, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Series:BE-Atitudes

This week we will continue our series on the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5:1-12.

As we listen to Jesus’ words here, we discover that he is describing a new way for us to live right-side-up in an up-side-down world.

The seventh Beatitude is found Matthew 5:9

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

We’ve been talking about what it means to be a “peacemaker”. Two weeks ago we saw that the first step is to have peace with God through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When we believe this truth, we become ministers of reconciliation in the world as ambassadors of Christ (2 Cor. 5:14-21). Last week, we saw that we need to look at and then own our part in any conflict or disagreement (Matt. 7:3-5). We must acknowledge our sin and confess it to God and the one we sinned against.

This week, we will look at how we reconcile with those who have sinned against us.

To prepare, read Ephesians 4:11-15 and Matthew 18:15-20.

NEW SERVICE TIME:  10am

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Last week we started talking about being peacemakers. We will talk about this topic again on Sunday– because I believe we all have at least one relationship that requires peacemaking and reconciliation. This is not an easy process, but we are called to make peace with others just as God has made peace with us through Jesus.

To prepare for Sunday, read 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 and Matthew 7:3-5. In these passages we see some internal principles to move us toward being peacemakers.

This is an incredibly practical, relevant, and challenging beatitude. I believe that each of us have areas in our lives where there is not “peace” in our relationships with others. As I’ve thought about this topic, I have discovered that there is much to consider. Because of that, we will spend the next 3 weeks looking at what biblical “peacemaking” looks like. I believe that we will be able to implement what we learn immediately.

This week, we will see some foundational principles necessary for us to live as “peacemakers”. To prepare, read Genesis 50:14-21 to see an example of a peacemaker at work and 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 to see our call to be a peacemaker.

I also want to remind you that we have combined our Sunday service with Faith Community Church for the next few months as their pastor, Troy Smith, is on a sabbatical.  If you remember, we did this at the end of the summer for a month as well. The big change for us is that our service time will be moved back from 9:15am to 10:00am.

NEW SERVICE TIME:  10am

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

Blessed are the pure in heart,  for they will see God.

What does it mean to be “pure in heart”? Join us as we ponder that question.

February 1st News- Blessed are the Merciful

January 29, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Series:BE-Atitudes

This week we will continue our series on the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5:1-12.

As we listen to Jesus’ words here, we discover that he is describing a new way for us to live right-side-up in an up-side-down world.

The fifth Beatitude is found Matthew 5:7

Blessed are the merciful,  for they will be shown mercy.

In this Beatitude, Jesus moves us from an internal process of a person relating to God to an toward expression towards others. As we understand who God is, who we are, and what he has done on our behalf, we are free to care for and express love to those around us.

That’s what we’ll be talking about this Sunday. To prepare, you can also read, Ephesians 2:1-10, Matthew 18:21-35, Micah 6:6-8 and Titus 3:3-8.

Finally, we will be having a pot-luck brunch after the service this Sunday. If you can, bring something to share and hang out with everyone. Think of it as a pre-Super Bowl tailgate tailgate!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug

January 25th News- Blessed are the those who hunger and thirst for righteousness

Series:BE-Atitudes

This week we will continue our series on the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5:1-12.

As we listen to Jesus’ words here, we discover that he is describing a new way for us to live right-side-up in an up-side-down world.

The third Beatitude is found Matthew 5:6

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,  for they will be filled.

What does it mean to “hunger and thirst for righteousness”? What is righteousness?!? Once again Jesus causes us to think and wonder about what he is saying. But that’s a good thing! We will look at scripture to discover what he is telling his followers…

That’s what we’ll be talking about this Sunday. To prepare, you can also read, Philippians 3:4-11, John 6:26-40, and Isaiah 55:1-7.

I also want to remind you that we have combined our Sunday service with Faith Community Church for the next few months as their pastor, Troy Smith, is on a sabbatical.  If you remember, we did this at the end of the summer for a month as well. January 18th News- Blessed are the Meek

January 15, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Series:BE-Atitudes

This week we will continue our series on the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5:1-12.

As we listen to Jesus’ words here, we discover that he is describing a new way for us to live right-side-up in an up-side-down world.

The third Beatitude is found Matthew 5:5:

Blessed are the meek,  for they will inherit the earth.

This, too sounds a bit up-side-down. But the key is understanding what jesus means when he uses the word we translate as “meek”. It’s not what you think– and understanding meekness properly can change your life and the lives of those around you!

That’s what we’ll be talking about this Sunday. To prepare, you can also read, Psalm 37:1-11 and see that Jesus is actually quoting a verse from this passage..

I also want to remind you that starting THIS SUNDAY, we will be combining our Sunday service with Faith Community Church for the next few months. If you remember, we did this at the end of the summer for a month as well. The big change for us is that our service time will be moved back from 9:15am to 10:00am.

NEW SERVICE TIME:  10am

Finally, I will preaching at the Hilltop Gospel Church at Russell House this Sunday and I want to invite you to be a part of it. Come and meet the fine folks of Russell House and encourage them with your love and good cheer!

Looking forward to Sunday!

Grace and peace,

Doug
