VNDF_logo_-_concrete_2I want to thank Tim and Katie Adams for sharing their hearts and their ministry with us last week. It has been a joy to walk with them over the last 6 years and to see how God is using them to impact the world. I encourage you to pray for Tim and Katie and for the Verbo Church in Nicaragua– and to visit to see what is happening in their ministry. I also want to encourage you to consider how you could support them in the calling God has placed on their lives. They are a part of our family and give all of us the opportunity to share the gospel and to love our neighbor in specific and tangible ways.

This week we will get back into the book of Mark and explore an incredible statement by Jesus. It’s found in Mark 8:34-9:1. These are challenging words, but they are extremely important to consider. I’m looking forward to talking about them together.

Make sure you check out the announcements below… Lots going on!

Looking forward to Sunday!

This week we will continue our study of the Gospel of Mark by reading Mark 8:27-33.

I love this passage because it touches on an issue of primary importance: Who is Jesus? There are a lot of different views out there about Jesus, but we are going to look at what God, himself, says.

Read the passage and see for yourself– then we’ll talk about it.

I also want to let you know about our involvement with the PIPINMinistrylogoN Ministry. PIN (People In Need) serves the homeless in Virginia Beach. For the last couple of years we have helped at their pancake breakfasts (Saturday mornings from 7:00am-9:00am) and their Sunday dinners and service (Sundays afternoons from 2:30pm-4:30pm).

Grace Family Fellowshiphas committed to serve at the pancake breakfasts on the following dates:

Jan. 29th; April 30th; July 30th; Oct. 29th; and Dec. 31st.

I want to encourage you to sign up for these events– they are a great opportunity to serve others and to see what the PIN Ministry is all about.

This week we officially leave the holidays behind us and return to our study of the Gospel of Mark.

When we were last with Jesus we saw him cast a demon out of a Gentile woman’s daughter, heal a deaf man, and feed four thousand people (Mark 7:24-8:10. This week we will see Jesus interact with the Pharisees, heal a blind man, and ask a very important question of his disciples.

One thing is for sure: It doesn’t get boring when you travel with Jesus!

To prepare for Sunday, I encourage you to read Mark 8:11-30. As you do, understand that the crowds are now beginning to fall away from him. This occurs during the last year of his ministry– as he gets closer to the cross.

Continue to pray for Chris Adams and his family. He is recovering very nicely, indeed, and feeling much better. Hopefully, we’ll see him Sunday!

Looking forward to seeing you all again…

A New New Years

January 7, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Last week in church we talked about New Year’s Resolutions…

I mentioned that a big problem that I’ve had in the past is that most resolutions focus on ME and what I am going to do to generate change in my life. The issue here is that the reason I’m making a resolution is because I have failed at the same thing in the past. In other words, what makes me think this time will be any different?

For the last few years I have tried something different. I look to God rather than myself.

In Zechariah, God says, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”

If we believe what God says here, we realize that our efforts will always fall short. Maybe we need to take God at his word.

So… I come back to the same thoughts each year in an effort to remind myself of the true source of my life. And that leads me to the same resolution each year:

New Year’s Resolution: TRUST GOD

 –      Trust God’s strength—not your own

–      Trust God’s faithfulness—not your own

–      Trust God’s plan—not your own

–      Because God has proven he is STRONG, FAITHFUL, and TRUSTWORTHY

 –      In history and in our lives

It also leads me to something that someone gave me a few years ago that helps me meditate on incredible truths that transform my life. I hope they encourage you as we head into 2011…

Ten Guidelines from God

Effective immediately, please be aware that there are changes YOU need to make in YOUR life. These changes need to be completed in order that I may fulfill My promises to you to grant you peace, joy and happiness in this life. I apologize for any inconvenience, but after all that I am doing, this seems very little to ask of you. Please, follow these 10 guidelines…

Life has dealt you a blow and all you do is sit and worry. Have you forgotten that I am here to take all your burdens and carry them for you? Or do you just enjoy fretting over every little thing that comes your way?

Matthew 6

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on… which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.

Something needs done or taken care of. Put it on the list. No, not to-do-listYOUR list… Put it on MY to-do-list. Let ME be the one to take care of the problem. I can’t help you until you turn it over to Me. And although My to-do-list is long, I am after all… God. I can take care of anything you put into My hands. In fact, if the truth were ever really known, I take care of a lot of things for you that you never even realize.

1 Peter 5:6-7

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Once you’ve trustgiven your burdens to Me, quit trying to take them back. Trust in Me. Have the faith that I will take care of all your needs, your problems and your trials. Problems with the kids? Put them on My list. Problem with finances? Put it on My list. Problems with your emotional roller coaster? For My sake, put it on My list. I want to help you. All you have to do is ask.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Don’t wake up one morning and say, “Well, I’m feeling much stronger now, I think I can handle it from here.” Why do you think you are feeling stronger now? It’s simple. You gave Me your burdens and I’m taking care of them. I also renew your strength and cover you in my peace. Don’t you know that if I give you these problems back, you will be right back where you started? Leave them with Me and forget about them. Just let Me do my job.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

I want you to forget a lot of things. Forget what was making you crazy. Forget the worry and the fretting because you know I’m in control. But there’s one thing I pray you never forget. Please, don’t forget to talk to Me – OFTEN! I love YOU! I want to hear your voice. I want you to include Me in on the things going on in your life. I want to hear you talk about your friends and family. Prayer is simply you having a conversation with Me. I want to be your dearest friend.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

6. HAVE FAITfaithH:

I see a lot of things from up here that you can’t see from where you are. Have faith in Me that I know what I’m doing. Trust Me; you wouldn’t want the view from My eyes. I will continue to care for you, watch over you, and meet your needs. You only have to trust Me. Although I have a much bigger task than you, it seems as if you have so much trouble just doing your simple part. How hard can trust be?

 Hebrews 11:1-2

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

You were taught to share when you were only two years old. When did you forget? That rule still applies. Share with those who are less fortunate than you. Share your joy with those who need encouragement. Share your laughter with those who haven’t heard any in such a long time. Share your tears with those who have forgotten how to cry. Share your faith with those who have none.

One Anothers in the New Testament

 John 13:34-35

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. [35] By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Romans 12:10

Be devoted to one another…Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

 Romans 12:16

Live in harmony with one another

Romans 14:13

1 Peter 4:9

Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

  Peter 5:5

clothe yourselves with humility toward one another

  John 1:7

have fellowship with one another

patience1I managed to fix it so in just one lifetime you could have so many diverse experiences. You grow from a child to an adult, have children, change jobs many times, learn many trades, travel to so many places, meet thousands of people, and experience so much. How can you be so impatient then when it takes Me a little longer than you expect to handle something on My to-do-list? Trust in My timing, for My timing is perfect. Just because I created the entire universe in only six days, everyone thinks I should always rush, rush, rush.

Isaiah 30:18

18 Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.

Be kind to others, for I love them just as much as I love you. They may not dress like you, or talk like you, or live the same way you do, but I still love you all. Please try to get along, for My sake. I created each of you different in some way. It would be too boring if you were all identical. Please, know I love each of your differences.

Philippians 2:1-4

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

As much as I love you, how can you not love yourself? You were created by me for one reason only— to be loved, and to love in return. I am a God of Love. Love Me. Love your neighbors. But also love yourself. It makes My heart ache when I see you so angry with yourself when things go wrong. You are very precious to me. Don’t ever forget…

Colossians 3:12

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
